de la Marwell Zoo

Marwell Zoo Hidden Gem: Many animal and plant species are becoming more and more endangered as the global population and demand for natural resources increases, but working together with other zoos and charities Marwell have contributed to a few conservation success stories. One of them is the Przewalski's horse. The last wild individual was seen in Mongolia in 1968 and it was declared extinct in the wild some years later. An international breeding programme for the animals still left in captivity was initiated. The programme has been very successful and in the 1990s the first horses were reintroduced to Hustai National Park in Mongolia, where they now number around 120 animals. They're now classified as Endangered by IUCN. You will find these tough animals behind our tiger playground. Image by Mark Fryer from our Flickr group.
